China-EU Symposium on Green Design Policies for Plastic Products Held in Beijing
On December 5, 2025, the Foreign Cooperation and Exchange Center of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment and the ClientEarth (European Environmental Protection Association) held the China-EU Policy Seminar on Green Design of Plastic Products in Beijing. Focusing on the hot topic of green design of plastic products, which is of concern to the international community, the seminar conducted in-depth exchanges from multiple perspectives including policies, standards, technologies, and practices. More than 50 representatives from the Department of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, relevant research institutions, industry associations, and enterprises from both China and the EU involved in plastic policies attended the seminar.

Chinese experts introduced the progress of global negotiations on plastic pollution governance, the advancement of China's standards for recyclable and renewable design of plastic products, the international policy trends regarding chemical management in plastic products, and the research results on safety assessment of food-grade recycled plastics. European experts shared the EU's policy framework for ensuring the safety and sustainability of plastics, as well as the latest practices in promoting the development of sustainable products through eco-design regulations. Representatives from institutions such as the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation, China Plastics Processing Industry Association, China Material Recycling Association, World Wide Fund for Nature, European Union Chamber of Commerce in China, as well as Nestlé, Coca-Cola, ExxonMobil, and Meituan, shared multi-perspective insights from policies, industries, and practices.
The delegates at the meeting agreed that strengthening dialogue and cooperation between China and Europe in the field of green design of plastic products is of great significance for reducing plastic pollution at the source and promoting the development of the circular economy. This seminar has provided a valuable communication platform for stakeholders from both sides, which is conducive to building consensus and jointly addressing the global challenge of plastic pollution.
